Nintendo Kicks Ass Apr. 22nd, 2007 @ 02:15 pm
So, my DS Lite, which I got last June, recently starting having problems with the main game in Super Mario Bros. (not with any of the mini games, or any other games) where after playing for 2-3 minutes, the DS would just power off. Java loaned me his Mario to see if the problem was with the game itself. Nope, powered off using his too. So, I look up warranty info on nintendo.com and it appears that registering your product is not equivalent to registering the warranty. In fact, they say that the only thing you need is proof that it was purchased within the past year. Great. I got it 10 months ago and it was a gift, so no receipt. But, woohoo, the DS Lite wasn't released in North America until June 11, 2006. So, I called nintendo, armed with my proof, ready for them to give me the customer service runaround.

Griffin took my call, after being on hold for about 3 minutes. I described the problem. He said that it sounded like a button soldering issue with the DS Lite itself. I had 2 options, wait for a prepaid label, send it off, and they would repair and send back. Total time of 2-3 weeks. Or, they could ship me a replacement via UPS, I keep the replacement and send mine back with their label. Only downside is usually they ask customers to pay $5 shipping, but he waived that (without me asking) and they need a credit card number, just to make sure you return the old unit. Otherwise, they charge you $115. This way, I get a brand new unit (clean week) and it takes about 4 days, and I'm never without a DS. What's to lose? This was the best customer service call that I can ever remember having. Very helpful and friendly and as the customer, I got exactly what I would have hoped for. Nintendo kicks ass.

Podcast Worth Listening To Jan. 19th, 2006 @ 07:04 pm
So, BusbeyTheElder claims that the only podcast worth listening to is Democrats Are Lost. While I disagree with him, I think I may even get him to concede that The Onion Radio News is also worthwhile. Of course, he'll be forced to concede once Wagnering The Movies is available.

Real Life Super Heroes??? Jan. 19th, 2006 @ 06:25 pm
So, I read comics and I was reading a comic forum and came across this link to writer Warren Ellis' site (not that I couldn't have found Ellis' site if I really wanted to). Doktor DiscorD can apparently use his optical technology to see the world in 3-D. His resume is impressive, including a PhD in Asskickology. (Puts mine to shame.) I'm not so impressed with Mr. Silent, but Kid Christ is certainly intimidating. Or maybe that's Alan Moore, Spider Jerusalem, and Johnny Sorrow, who knows? Maybe they're looking for sidekicks.

My iPod Whacked My USB Port Dec. 20th, 2005 @ 06:51 pm
Seriously. This morning, I grabbed my iPod to sync it with my iMac before heading off to work. But I noticed that the display light just stayed on, and it didn't respond (nor did the iMac) when I connected it. I tried the standard reset trick that Apple recommends, and that did not work. In fact, the iPod was completely unresponsive. So, I figured I would ask around at work to see if anyone else had this problem. Worst case, the battery runs down from the display being constantly lit and then it resets. Well, no one had heard of this problem, so when I got home, I checked the iPod and sure enough, the charge had run down. Now, it did respond to the reset trick, but just powered off. So, I plugged it into the iMac again. Nothing. Hmmmm. OK, I'll plug it in to an outlet to charge. Huzzah! That worked. The iPod became responsive again. So, I figured I would just connect to the iMac again and sync and let it charge there. Nothing. So, it would charge in the outlet, but not through the USB connection. So, I switched it to another USB port and tried again, and it worked. But, connecting anything else to the original USB port didn't work. So, it appears that the iPod did something to that USB port. Fortunately, rebooting the computer got the port working again.

If you've experienced anything similar, I'd like to hear about it.

Wagnering the Movies Nov. 17th, 2005 @ 08:36 pm
So, I'm debating on starting a podcast called "Wagnering the Movies" (explanation below). The plan is to make the podcast only about a minute long - 25 seconds of intro music, 25 seconds of outro music, and 10 seconds of me Wagnering a movie in the middle. Let me know if you'd listen.

Wagnering a movie: Providing a one sentence spoiler that reveals a key plot detail of a movie. This came about when discussing Serenity at work. A group of co-workers and I saw the movie the Friday it was released. Monday morning, we returned to work and were talking about one person who saw it three times that weekend. Also sitting nearby was someone who had not yet seen the movie, but planned to. At this point, I did not know whether he had seen the movie or not, but he did have his Bose noise canceling headphones on and didn't mention anything when we were discussing the movie. The person who had seen the movie three times (we'll call him Joey) said that it was cool to see the reactions of the others in the theatre during the big shock scene. I said, "Oh, you mean when " (I am forbidden from saying this again), and got the giant "What the Hell did you just do" eyes from Joey and another friend. I realized my mistake, turned to the co-worker who apparently had NOT seen the movie and did not have his Bose noise canceling headphones turned on, to have him greet me with the "You're number one" hand gesture. Henceforth, this is known as Wagnering a movie.

FYI, I'm pretty sure there are no hard feelings - I did apologize.

"In the Sixth Sense, Bruce Willis is dead.

» Save Arrested Development
So, I just found this post on the berkeleyplace blog. David Cross's rant is quite nice. Please write to Fox to try and save Arrested Development.
» Arrested Development...No Sooner Did I Post
So, no sooner did I post (btw, I'm still deciding if blogging is for me) that did Fox announce the cancellation of Arrested Development. Fart, Hell, Damn.

I need to find some more places to bitch about this, but they already screwed me a few years ago when they cancelled Firefly. Maybe if I (and others) bitch enough, it will get picked up somewhere. Screw Fox. And the horse they rode in on.
» Fountains of Wayne and Ram
So, I was listening to "The Girl I Can't Forget" from Fountains of Wayne today and I realized that this is essentially one of Ram's blog posts (to be made at some point), just set to music.
» Arrested Development
So, I'm not much of a blogger, but...I was watching Family Guy and saw the commercial for Arrested Development. This is far and away the funniest show on television (in years). Arrested Development, that is, not Family Guy, although that's funny too. Anyway, I have this sinking feeling that Fox is about to scrap another great show (see Firefly) without properly supporting or marketing it. Not sure that I can do much but encourage others to watch, but it was on my mind. Come on, you replace Henry Winkler's lawyer character with a lawyer played by Scott Baio. That's genius.

"Daddy horny, Michael."
